Information Practices, within the Office of the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, administers the campus's response to requests for public and subpoenaed University records and provides technical and practical assistance to the campus on matters related to public access to and disclosure of information maintained in University files.
The University of California, Santa Cruz is simultaneously committed to the individual's right to
privacy and the public's right to information access, as required by federal and state laws and university policies and procedures.

In general, California law recognizes two competing interests, the right of an individual to personal privacy (Information Practices Act, California Constitution) and the right of the public to access information concerning the conduct of the people's business (California Public Records Act).
The California Information Practices Act (IPA) protects the privacy of individuals and establishes standards for access by an individual to records pertaining to themselves.
The California Public Records Act (CPRA) ensures the public's right to government records, including those of the University of California.
